Basic German A1.1


This is a beginners’ course in Germany for learners who have never before learned German. You will learn basic German vocabulary, key expressions, and essential grammatical structures at the A1 level.  You will practice these actively in a variety of realistic scenarios, and work on all four skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening.  You will learn, for example, how to:

  • get to know and introduce each other,
  • tell the time and talk about quantities,
  • spell words,
  • talk about various topics like languages, family, jobs, and travel,
  • get around on foot, by car or public transport, and
  • read and compose short written messages.

Further, the topic of culture will be addressed.  You will talk about and analyze experiences of your German surroundings and develop an understanding of your surroundings and compare them to your own sociocultural background.  Some of the topics we will discuss include, but are not limited to:

  • German holidays,
  • food and eating in Germany,
  • travelling in Germany (Mittweida, Saxony, Germany, and Europe), and
  • interpersonal communication and networking in Germany.
