Dr. Hedwig Ngwa

Hedwig K. Ngwa Akum holds a PhD in Gender and Development Studies as well as the Master's and bachelor’s degrees in Geography. She is a geography teacher at Government High School, Great Soppo Buea. Hedwig also doubles as part time lecturer of gender and natural resource management in the Department of Women and Gender Studies at the university of Buea, and part-time lecturer of Gender and Local Governance at the National School for Local Administration (NASLA) in Buea, Cameroon. She is an advocate for gender, environment, and development issues.

Hedwig is a volunteer with Martin Luther King Junior Memorial foundation (LUKMEF Cameroon), a civil society organization, where she serves in different capacities including project manager and gender outreach focal point. She is affiliated with some NGOs, associations and civil society organizations including GHAPE (a grass root community based NGO advocating for a Grounded and Holistic Approach for Peoples Empowerment);  the South West North West Women’s Task Force (SNWOT) - a women’s civil society coalition for peace in Cameroon; Pioneer female President of the Mankon Cultural and Development Association (MACUDA) Buea,  an association with core values of solidarity and unity representing the interest of the people at the grass root level), etc.  

Hedwig is author of “A Gender Perspective of municipal solid waste generation and management in the city of Bamenda, Cameroon" (2019) (https://www.africanbookscollective.com/authors-editors/akum-hedwig-kien ). She has supervised several undergraduate and postgraduate students’ projects at the university of Buea and NASLA, Cameroon.
